Enabling Women's Participation in India's Logistics Sector

Executive Summary

The logistics industry in India represents a major driver of economic growth yet faces a significant gender disparity in its workforce. Research indicates that a small fraction of working women currently participate in trade and logistics services.

To address this gap, a comprehensive study examined the supply and demand side constraints affecting recruitment and retention. Key barriers include mobility challenges, lack of gender sensitive infrastructure, and deep seated societal norms regarding domestic responsibilities. The analysis identified seventy-three specific job roles where female participation could be maximized in the short run to drive transformative impacts.

Recommendations for transformation include establishing institutional gender labs to oversee policy implementation and monitor progress. Furthermore, private firms are encouraged to adopt flexible work arrangements and invest in safety measures to create a more inclusive ecosystem.

Strengthening the partnership between government agencies and industry associations is essential for building a resilient and gender balanced logistics sector. This holistic approach aims to transform the industry into a space that values diversity and drives national growth.
