Enhancing Economic Potential Linking Indian MSMEs and Women-led Enterprises with Global Value Chains
Executive Summary
This study examines the integration of Indian small businesses and women led enterprises into global value chains. It identifies micro and medium sized firms as the backbone of the national economy, contributing nearly half of all exports. However, women owned businesses account for only a fifth of these enterprises and are largely concentrated in the micro or informal segment.
The study highlights several structural barriers faced by these firms, including limited access to finance, gaps in digital literacy, and inadequate trade infrastructure. It also notes that a majority of women owned units are located in rural areas, which limits their connectivity to major ports and markets.
To strengthen global competitiveness, the report outlines a roadmap focused on gender responsive infrastructure and specialized training. Key recommendations include the establishment of dedicated help desks at ports and the introduction of certification programs for women exporters. These targeted interventions are expected to support inclusive growth and improve India’s position in the global market.
